Nang Kham Mart’s Story: ESE Events Connect Community to Education

TEES teacher and youth leader Nang Kham Mart is 26 years old from Nar Ngwe village, Lashio, Northern Shan State. Her family includes; her father Sai San Khin, mother Nang Mo Bain and her younger brother and sister. In 2015, Nang Kham Mart worked as a nurse aid after which she started teaching Shan language from 2016 to 2019 paving the way for her future as a TEES teacher. Nang Kham Mart is one of hundreds of TEES (Teachers Establishing Education Services) teachers trained in the CASE2Learn project funded by the European Union in partnership with ADRA and RISE reaching remote ethnic communities to increase access to education services.

One of the projects activities is conducting ESE (Education Sensitisation Events) events in order to engage the community and raise awareness on the importance of education. Nang Kham Mart and her co-worker, Nang Kham Nyut, went to Mar Kat village to meet with the village chief and discussed holding an ESE event in their village, Nar Ngwe. The village chief invited other teachers to make comment and finally decided to hold the ESE event. In further meetings it was discussed the situation of the village, number of participants proposed and the ways in which the community would contribute, such as providing food. The village leader and teachers partnered with the local monastery and volunteers to make the preparations.

On the day of the ESE event, the number of participants was larger than expected. Children, parents, School Management Committees and teachers were all present. Nang Kham Mart remarks “I was very happy and pleasant about having this ESE event in my village. This is the first time holding an ESE event in my village. Before the start of the ESE ceremony, teachers, parents, SMC, leaders and children were motivated to participate in every activity and discussion and were happy doing it. In the ESE event, included was games relating to the value of education and some activities for children. At night, they performed songs and cultural dancing.”

Nang Kham Mart was motivated by this event seeing parents and their children more interested in education. After the ESE event, parents in particular had more confidence to talk and participate in discussion as well as having more hopes and ambitions for their children’s education than before. Now, parents want more of their children to be able to attend Middle School, High School and even go to University. Children are trying harder in their studies, sports and other school related activities.

As a result of the ESE event, parents, leaders, youth, religious leaders and children have become more connected and can feel unity in organising and participating together in education and social activities. The community is more supportive of children to learn not only their mother tongue language, but also Burmese and English while also maintaining their traditions and culture. Children are improving in communication by engaging in sports, painting and other education related activities through ESE community events. The change of attitude in regard to education has also seen the increased involvement of women participating and leading education in their communities as teachers like Nang Kham Mart.
