SEAQE2 Project Responds to COVID-19 in Myanmar

Since COVID-19 began spreading to countries around the globe, ADRA has been working to ramp up its operations to respond to the highly infectious virus.

Myanmar was one of the last countries to report any cases, despite sharing a long porous border with China where the outbreak began in Wuhan Province. On March 24, Myanmar reported its first 2 cases, both imported by Myanmar nationals returning to the country. As of 4 May 2020, there are now 161 confirmed cases, 6 deaths and 49 recoveries primarily based in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Myanmar, various ADRA Myanmar projects have been working on responses to support vulnerable communities. In the Norad and ADRA Norway funded SEAQE2 project based in Hpa-an, Kayin State, budget was reallocated to implement activities with the support of the PTA (Parent Teacher Associations) and communities in SEAQE’s targeted schools.

Soap, liquid hand soap and health prevention and awareness posters were distributed to target communities. Due to the limitation in accessing the communities directly, ADRA Myanmar partnered with the PTAs and schools from each community to distribute the items.

34 schools including; 19 Government schools and 15 Community schools (ACS) were targeted to reach 5,139 households in a total population of 24,687. Below is a list of the items distributed to the communities:

9,400 – A4 Flyers on COVID-19 Prevention

9,400 – A4 Flyers on Cough Etiquette

32 – Posters on COVID-19 Prevention

32 – Posters on Hand Washing Steps

256 – 500ml Liquid Hand Soap

1,344 – 60g Bars of Soap

ADRA Myanmar is also currently planning a response in the PRICE project located in Chin State and formulating potential responses in other projects around Myanmar.
