45 year old coffee farmer U Thang is father to six living in a village with a population of 409 in Chin State.
Before farming coffee, U Thang cultivated Elephant Foot Yam. Though successful to some extent, U Thang felt it wise to invest in the cultivation of perennial crops. Coffee plantations can be harvested yearly once the fruit has reached maturity, but his initial knowledge was limited on how to breed coffee in the seedbeds which led to an unsuccessful yield.
U Thang accompanied an exposure trip to Pyin Oo Lwin pre-COVID that was facilitated by the project. This is where he had the privilege of raising his interests, concerns, and setbacks with well-experienced farmers getting answers to some of his big concerns.
Back home with renewed motivation and lessons learned, he began preparing the soil and started a nursery on his three-acre farm, where twelve thousand seedlings are now seen thriving. Applying what he learned, the undeniable result in his words were “the survival rate after the trip increased 85% from 31%.”
U Thang is expecting to transplant at least 5,000 seedlings, if not 10,000 to secure sufficient farmland and sell to interested farmers for 500-750 MMKs each seed. U Thang also wants to see a fundamental change in the approach local people take towards agricultural farming and cultivation to penetrate markets.
Ideally with a farm of 10,000 coffee plants, U Thang is aiming to secure a foothold in penetrating the market with a quality he is completely responsible for and approves. To meet this end, he said he still needs continuing support from the project in terms of both value-adding and market linkage.
“I have had failed attempts in the previous nursery. But, as I ask for answers to my problems from farmers and managers I had the privilege of meeting during the trip, I now can successfully do coffee breeding nursery on my own.”
ဦးထန်း၏ ဇာတ်ကြောင်း : စိုက်ပျိုးရေးလေ့လာမှုခရီးမှသည် ချင်းပြည်အခြေစိုက် ကော်ဖီစိုက်တောင်သူအား အကျိုးရှိစေခြင်း
အသက် ၄၅ နှစ်အရွယ်ရှိ ကော်ဖီစိုက်တောင်သူ ဦးထန်းသည် ချင်းပြည်နယ်အတွင်းရှိ လူဦးရေ ၄၀၉ ဦးခန့် နေထိုင်သော ရွာလေးတစ်ရွာမှ ဖခင်တစ်ဦးလည်းဖြစ်သည်။ ကော်ဖီပင် မစိုက်ပျိုးမီက သူသည်ဝဥကိုစိုက်ပျိုးခဲ့ရာ အတိုင်းအတာ တစ်ခုအထိ အောင်မြင်ခဲ့သော်လည်း နှစ်ရှည်ပင်သီးနှံစိုက်ပျိုးခြင်းက ပို၍သင့်တော်သည်ဟု သူသိရှိနားလည်ထားသည်။ ကော်ဖီစိုက်ခင်းသည်လည်း နှစ်စဉ်သီးနှံရင့်မှည့်ချိန်၌ ရိတ်သိမ်းနိုင်သည်။ သို့သော်အစပထမပိုင်းတွင် ကော်ဖီပင်စိုက်ပျိုးရာတွင် အခက်အခဲစိန်ခေါ်မှုနှင့် အကန့်အသတ်များက ရှိနေသည်။
ယင်းနောက်သူသည် COVID မတိုင်မီတွင် စီမံကိန်း၏ စီစဉ်ထောက်ပံ့မှုဖြင့် ပြင်ဦးလွင်မြို့ရှိ ကော်ဖီခြံများသို့ သွားရောက်၍ အတွေ့အကြုံရှိတောင်သူများထံမှ ကော်ဖီစိုက်ပျိုးခြင်းဆိုင်ရာ လေ့လာမှုများပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ရာ သူ၏စိုးရိမ်ပူပန်မှုအချို့အတွက် အဖြေနှင့် ဗဟုသုတများကိုရရှိခဲ့ပြီး အကျိုးစီးပွားကိုလည်း မြှင့်တင်ခွင့်ရရှိခဲ့သည်။
အဆိုပါလေ့လာရေးခရီးစဉ်မှ ပြန်ရောက်လာချိန်တွင် သူလေ့လာရရှိခဲ့သော သင်ခန်းစာများဖြင့် သုံးဧကကျယ်ဝန်းသော မြေနေရာပေါ်တွင် မြေကိုပြင်ဆင်ပြီး ပျိုးခင်းတစ်ခုကိုစတင်တည်ထောင်ခဲ့ရာ ယခုအခါတွင် ပျိုးပင်ပေါင်း ၁၂၀၀၀ မှာ ရှင်သန် အောင်မြင်နေပြီလည်းဖြစ်သည်။ သူလေ့လာရရှိခဲ့သည်များကို လက်တွေ့ကျင့်သုံးခဲ့ရာတွင် အပင်များ၏ရှင်သန်မှုနှုန်းမှာ ခရီးစဉ် အပြီးတွင် ၃၁ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းမှ ၈၅ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းအထိ တိုးတက်လာခဲ့သည်ကို တွေ့ရှိရသည်။
သူ့အနေဖြင့် အနည်းဆုံးပျိုးပင် ၅၀၀၀ ကို အစားထိုးစိုက်ပျိုးနိုင်ရန်လည်း မျှော်လင့်နေပြီး အကယ်၍မြေနေရာ လုံလောက်မှု မရှိပါက ပျိုးပင် များအား ကော်ဖီစိုက်ပျိုးရန် စိတ်ပါဝင်စားသည့် တောင်သူများအား တစ်ပင်လျှင်ကျပ် ၅၀၀- ၇၅၀ နှုန်းတို့ဖြင့် ရောင်းချပေးရန်လည်း စီစဉ်ဆောင်ရွက်ထားသည်။
ထို့ပြင် နောက်တစ်ချက်အနေဖြင့် သူသည် ဒေသခံလူထုအများစု၏ စိုက်ပျိုးရေးနှင့် သီးနှံစိုက်ပျိုးရေးသို့ ချဉ်းကပ်ပုံတွင် အခြေခံကျသော ပြောင်းလဲမှုကို အဓိကတွေ့မြင်လိုခြင်း ဆန္ဒလည်း သူ့တွင်ရှိနေသည်။
ထို့ကြောင့် သူအနေဖြင့် ကော်ဖီပင် ၁၀,၀၀၀ ခန့်ရှိသော ခြံတစ်ခြံနှင့်အတူ ဈေးကွက်ကို အပြည့်အဝတာဝန်ယူပြီး လက်ခံနိုင်သော အရည်အသွေးဖြင့် ဈေးကွက်ထိုးဖောက်နိုင်ရန်လည်း ရည်ရွယ်ကြိုးပမ်းဆောင်ရွက်လျက်ရှိသည်။ အဆိုပါရည်မှန်းချက် ပြည့်မီရန်အတွက်မှာ တန်ဖိုးမြှင့်နှင့် ဈေးကွက်ချိတ်ဆက်မှုနှစ်ခုစလုံးတွင်လည်း စီမံကိန်း၏ အထောက်အပံ့များ ဆက်လက်လိုအပ်နေသေးကြောင်း သူကပြောကြားသည်။
“ကျွန်တော်အရင်ပျိုးခင်းအတွက်ကြိုးပမ်းမှုတုန်းကတော့ မအောင်မြင်ခဲ့ပါဘူး။ ဒါပေမဲ့ ခရီးစဉ်အတွင်းမှာတော့ တောင်သူတွေနဲ့ မန်နေဂျာတွေနဲ့တွေ့ဆုံခွင့်ရရှိခဲ့ပြီး ပြဿနာကိုအဖြေရှာပေးနိုင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ အခုအခါမှာတော့ ကျွန်တော့စိုက်ခင်းက အောင်မြင်နေပါပြီ” ဟု ၄င်းကဆိုသည်။
